History of Circle of Security-Parenting in Nebraska

Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) is a relationship based early intervention program designed to enhance attachment security between parents and children. It is intended to help caregivers increase their awareness of their children’s needs and assess whether their own responses meet those needs. COS-P is based extensively upon attachment theory and current affective neuroscience. It is also a basic protocol that can be used in a variety of settings, from group sessions (8 weeks) to family therapy to home visitation.

The focus of COS-P is based on the following themes:

  • Teaching the basics of attachment theory via the Circle of Security™
  • Increasing parent skills in observing parent/child interactions
  • Increasing capacity of the caregiver to recognize and sensitively respond to children’s needs
  • Supporting a process of reflective dialogue between educators and parent to explore both strengths and areas of parent difficulties (i.e., being “Bigger, Stronger, Wiser, and Kind,” supporting exploration, and supporting attachment)

Where Have We Been?

  • Mark Hald trained in COS-P & 10 day intensive
  • Mark begins offering classes in the panhandle
  • Mark begins talking to state stakeholders about statewide implementation
  • 2 additional LMPHs attend COS-P from panhandle
  • Additional classes offered in the panhandle
  • Mark presents information on COS-P to PPHHS
  • PPHHS votes to send people to COS-P training across country (grant funding)
  • Classes start in the panhandle through grant funding
  • Lynne Brehm (NCFF) convenes a group of EC stakeholders to explore interest in bringing COS-P to Nebraska
  • COS-P Training in Kearney (80 scholarships at 50% of cost, 114 Registered Parent Educators trained)
  • Initiation of the Parent Education Professional (PEP) Community
2015 and Beyond
  • Approximately 130 Registered Parent Educators located in the state
  • Common evaluation tools developed for use by all
  • Marketing materials available to all educators in both Spanish and English
  • Continuing to explore payment options for COS-P classes
  • Building a network of reflective consultants, in collaboration with Circle of Security International
  • Ongoing support of Educators through consultation and quarterly support calls

The PEP community is a collaborative effort of many state partners including the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation- Rooted in Relationships Early Childhood Mental Health Initiative, The Early Development Network (Nebraska Department of Education-Part C), The Head Start State Collaboration Office, and Together for Kids and Families (Department of Health and Human Services).

Rooted in Relationships is an initiative that partners with communities to implement evidence based practices that enhance the social-emotional development of children, birth through age 8. One part of this initiative supports communities as they implement the Pyramid Model, a framework of evidence-based practices that promote the social, emotional, and behavioral competence of young children, in selected family childcare homes and childcare centers. In addition, communities develop and implement a long-range plan that influences the early childhood systems of care in the community and supports the healthy social-emotional development of children.

Charged with consulting broadly among early care and education systems at the federal, state, and local level. The state Head Start Association is encouraged to be engaged to support and inform state early childhood policies, plans, and processes.
